Plymouth Energy Community

DARE’s technical team was contracted by Plymouth Energy Community in 2014 to provide the feasibility studies for the first portfolio of schools for their community owned energy scheme. The technical feasibility work was delivered by Dr Tom Furness.

This technical feasibility work was delivered as a continuation of previously delivered work by one of the DARE consultancy team, Andrew Shadrake, who was commissioned by Plymouth City Council to lead the feasibility and community engagement work which created Plymouth Energy Community. Andrew stayed involved helping PEC to develop their business and financial models and facilitated the independent community leadership of the organisation. The technical feasibility work led to the installation of a combined total of 0.8MW of solar PV, on 21 schools and community buildings in Plymouth. By October 2014, this was complete and PEC had increased Plymouth’s solar PV generation by 6% in just one year.

The installations were delivered through support from Plymouth City Council and a Community Share Offer, which raised £602,000 in just seven weeks. PEC renewables has gone on to win a number of prestigious awards and carry out two further solar share issues.
