Established in the year 2000, DARE is a Devon based social enterprise with many years experience advising on renewables and energy efficiency.

We are completely independent and impartial and are not partnered with any commercial installers or energy supply companies.

Dr Tom Furness - Director and Head of Technical Services

 

Devon born, Tom started his renewable energy career working as a hydropower engineer in the late 90’s. Tom has been involved with DARE since its inception and founding in 2000.

Tom is a technical specialist and has degrees in energy and renewables. Tom has worked on a huge range of projects from project managing multi million pound turnkey hybrid solutions, through to feasibility work at a domestic scale.

Since gaining his Ph.D. Tom has kept up his education and is qualified to install most renewable technologies.

 

Andrew Shadrake - Senior Associate

 

 

Andrew helps create community renewable energy organisations, specialising in legal structures, finance and business planning.  He has worked with eight communities across Devon developing solar PV generation, and wrote the initial business case for Plymouth Energy Community.  He also developed Devon County Council’s Community Energy Legal Toolkit flowcharts.  He can offer free consultancy support to eligible groups as a preferred provider for The Hive , and is a reviewer for the Community Shares Standard Mark.  He has a particular interest in developing renewable models which do not depend on subsidy and home energy efficiency models which are cost effective for people on very low incomes.

 

Kirsty Tooke - Director and Executive Manager

 

 

Kirsty has worked for DARE since 2005 .She has provided advice for community groups, businesses, domestic property owners, tourist attractions, churches, schools and educational facilities across the county on both energy efficiency and renewable energy. She has assisted community groups with funding applications, provided site assessment and technical appraisal services and given presentations to assist them with cutting their carbon emissions.

 

Kirsty has assessed a number of community buildings, settlements and district authority areas in order to advise on effective carbon savings through the utilisation of efficiency measures and renewable energy equipment installation. She has worked with a variety of sites including community housing associations, schools, churches and a multi-use community facilities, providing advice on a range of technologies and solutions. Kirsty has also co-authored community scale renewable energy reports and settlement energy plans.

Kirsty has provided the roles of project manager, community mentor and technical officer during her time with DARE evidencing her wide skill set which includes both engagement and assessment proficiencies in energy related programmes.

 

Kirsty is also an experienced events organiser, having run conferences, exhibitions, tours, excursions and training for a variety of sectors.

 

Kirsty is currently working as part of North Tawton’s Neighbourhood Plan group providing assistance with the sustainability aspects of the plan and community engagement.

Adrian Sargood – Director and Chair

 

Adrian Sargood - Director and Chair

 

 

Adrian has been on the board of Directors since 2012 and took the position as Chair in 2014.

Adrian has a Degree and PhD in physics from Southampton University. He worked in Medical Physics for the NHS, ending as Director of Medical Physics & Bioengineering at the Royal Devon & Exeter NHS Trust as well as Clinical Director for Support Services.

Adrian became involved in environmental issues after reading the Club of Rome book “Limits to Growth.”

Upon moving to Devon, Adrian became a member of Bovey Climate Action and is founder member of climate action group “Greener Teign” in the Teign Valley. Adrian is also a member and Chair of the renewable energy group “Two Valleys Community Energy.”

Dorothee Fitzsimmons - Director

 

 

Doe started working in the environment sector in the late 90s specialising in coordinating and managing projects which require the input of various environmental disciplines and included setting up Environmental Management Systems for the manufacturing industry and supporting communities with environmental projects (neighbourhood improvement, community energy, flood resilience). Doe is passionate about education and community capacity building. She managed a transnational European project on community energy called SEACs which DARE was part of and led the development of the Energy Tool Kit.

 

Doe works full time at Devon County Council coordinating specialist environmental advice and design input to minor and major road, rail and cycle projects. She joined DARE as a director in 2014 supporting the organisation with its business strategy, project development, promotion and communication.

Peter Sandover – Associate

 

 

Peter, an architect has over 30 years experience in sustainable architecture, masterplanning and regeneration. His recent work has focused on renewables, community masterplans and engagement strategies. His work includes regeneration proposals and masterplans throughout the South West, and is the author of sustainable design guidance. Peter was founder of the South Devon Coastal Renewable Energy Network and the South Devon Wood Fuel Hub.
